The next day I got a call from Jason and we went out for some good vegetarian
food and he showed me around Atlanta with tons of girl-watching ("wow" is all
I have to say about Southern women) and the obligatory stop at a music
store... I won't tell you the name of the place because they're TOTAL
ASSHOLES but it was like Disneyland... just stuff, everywhere... far as the
eye could see... and I even found some stuff I WANTED TO BUY... but they're
TOTAL ASSHOLES... and there were guitars of all makes, models, and colors; PA
Gear; Amps... and my eyes gleamed at the thought of giving every cent I own
to this bright, shiney, CANDY-LIKE store...
... but...
THEY'RE TOTAL ASSHOLES.
So NEVER give 'em another lick o' business... you KNOW who you ARE, store...
We went to the Jerry Jam after that to catch the Disco Biscuits, who were
pretty cool, doing the tranced-out Phish jam pretty well but putting their
own spin on it, after which the bass player and I were on a taping for Z-93
to be aired later that night before the station played the entire DSO second
set from the first night...
... that's right, someone handed ME a mic and asked me what I thought...
... gonna be a long, long, crazy crazy night... a LATE LATE crazy night... we
got on over an hour late this time...
The show that night was 7/9/89 from Giant's Stadium...
Why not a little "Shakedown"? The first set faired better the second night
because of the previous night's experiences and I was able to set everything
back quite close to what had taken me several songs the night before almost
immediately (this, of course, didn't stop me from messing with the mix for
the rest of the night). Scott had picked a late-eighties show at my urging
because I wanted to hear some change-up from the night before...
"Jack Straw" gave the audience the ol' one-two and I think the band sounded
better after a solid night's sleep... that is until "Victim or the Crime"
brought the first set to a screeching hault... it was out of character, limp,
and a poor telling all-around, but they made up for it by the end of the set
with "Brown-Eyed Women" and a floating "Birdsong"...
(to the guys in the band - please don't fire me but you know I'm right about
this)
Again we had to keep the break extremely short, so after water was retreived
I jumped out to the console again and we were off with a great "China Cat"
into a pounding "Rider" that jammed and jammed, followed by "Samson" with
Dino and Ahmer cracking on their kits, a VERY rare "Built To Last" (The Dead
only did it a handful of times) and one of my refreshed favorites "Truckin"
before "Drumz"...
"Space" was truncated again due to the late hour but folks got up off their
asses for "Gimme Some Lovin" and settled into the groove of "Goin' Down The
Road Feelin' Bad"... "Throwin' Stones>NFA" ended the set and the chant didn't
stop until the band came back and played "Brokedown"... cries for "PHIL!!!"
were heard again this night as Mike Hazdra stepped up to sing "Box of Rain"
and send everyone on their way, another show done...
As Beau and crew loaded the trailer we listened to the rest of the second set
(about "Other One" onward) being broadcast on Z-93 and I got a little chill,
sitting there in the dark in the Touring Vessel... we had made a few more
folks happy tonight, and that's what I'm in it for...
I guess I DO dig this rock 'n' roll lifestyle... quite a bit...
