SCOTT LARNED MEMORIAL AND PAJAMA PARTY - NOTES FROM FROGMAN: The mood was somber, but festive and the evening started off with a set by Cornmeal. They played some great bluegrass and really got smoking as the night went on. Highlights included an emotional I Shall Be Released, Workin' On A Building>Cumberland and Will the Circle Be Unbroken. During the Circle and impromtu circle formed in the middle of the audience that grew and morphed into a living entity. Cornmeal is one of the more compelling local bands in Chicago. After that there were some speeches about Scott from the band's manager and their agent. All attested to Scott being, not only an incredible musician, but primarily what a fine person he was. Then Web Ed played some B3 to get the gospel mood started. Cam got up on stage and played the part of the Baptist Preacher and was hilarious. He broke the somber mood and reminded us that this was a celebration of life.

During this, Kris (from Cornmeal) asked me if I wanted to play next. I was a bit taken aback as I didn't expect to be playing, but I'm not one to turn down such an opportunity, so doing my best to shake my nerves I headed for the stage along with WebEd on the B3, former DSO bassist Mike Hazdra, JP from Cornmeal on drums and Kris on lead guitar. We played New Speedway Boogie>Other One>Franklin's Tower.

After that the DSO took the stage and John spoke for a bit about Scott. John and the rest of the DSO were visably still shook up, but kudos to them they still had it in them to play. The keys spot was empty for their performance. John spoke about how Scott was his brother and how brother's don't always get along, but their bond is still blood. John and the band then performed an exceptional version of Stella Blue. John was reaching for the emotion of this song, obviously fighting tears at some points and delivered an exceptional version of this most appropriate song.

Next Rob spoke briefly about how Scott was the reason he was in the band. How Scott had initially contacted him and how he was brought into the DSO family because of him. He was also a bit shook up, but said he felt for the first time like he was getting out of the funk he was in by the experience of making music. The DSO then performed Walk In the Sunshine.

After that Mike Muraat who formerly was the Bobby in DSO got up on stage with them and also Barry Brown from Jack Straw got up on keys. This was a good old fashioned JAM, folks. It was wonderful to see Mike performing with the DSO again. They performed a slinky version of China>Rider with an incredible jam between the tunes. I believe after this was How Sweet It Is. I felt compelled to get Donna Jean up there, so I asked Donna if she was going to sing. She wasn't sure. I told her along with a couple others how I would love to hear her sing. I got up on stage and asked Lisa to have Donna sing. Lisa got down from the stage and convinced Donna to sing on the Cassidy with Mike. What a huge treat this was!!! Donna was wonderful up there and the Cassidy was beeyootiful!! Donna was clearly the highlight of the evening for me as it was the first time I had the pleasure of hearing her sing. She seemed like a very down to earth woman when I met her and what a kind gesture to make it out to Chicago for Scott's Memorial Jam.

I then got back up on stage along with Kris and Wavy from Cornmeal, Web Ed back on the B3, Dino on drums and Mike stayed on guitar. We did a Sugaree, Breadbox, Eyes>He's Gone>Lovelight> (during the Lovelight Tiny got up with his harp and Ray Quinn, the owner of Martyrs' got up and sang the second verse and joined Web Ed for the PigPen rap. The stage was able to fit one more as Lisa joined in for the NFA>GDTRFB and the evening ended with Bid You Goodnight.
-Frogman

oh and I forgot one other thing, Michelle Hallman sang Women Are Smarter before the How Sweet It Is in the third configuration.
